Senate confirms John Brennan as CIA director

Washington, DC, United States (4E) – In what could fill another key position in the national security team, the United States Senate on Thursday approved the nomination of counter-terrorist expert John Brennan for the post CIA director with a 63-34 vote.

Brennan’s nomination came after a long 13-hour congressional obstruction over the Obama administration’s decision about possible use of drones to kill targeted militants on American soil.

Earlier, the Senate confirmed John Kerry as Secretary of State Department and Chuck Hagel as new the Defense Secretary.

President Barack Obama welcomed the Senate’s vote and said that the U.S. would be safe under Brennan.

He also praised Brennan for his “commitment to working with Congress, his ability to build relationships with foreign partners and his fidelity to the values that define us as a nation.”
